Why Photos Alone Aren't Enough Anymore

Good photos used to be an advantage. Now they're just the entry fee.

Photos aren't wrong, and a business with genuinely bad photos is still at a disadvantage. The problem is that decent photos have stopped being a differentiator, because almost every competitor already has them, whether from a professional shoot or simply a good phone in decent light.

That means photos alone no longer separate you from the business next door. Something else has to.

  • Decent photography is now the baseline, not an advantage, most competitors already have it
  • A tour is still genuinely differentiating, because comparatively few local businesses have one
  • Photos show curated moments; a tour shows the actual space, which reads as more trustworthy
  • The businesses standing out on a crowded listing are the ones offering more than a gallery

What changed

A decade ago, professional photography on a listing was a genuine edge. Smartphone cameras and widespread awareness of basic photo quality closed that gap for most businesses, so a scroll through any local search category now shows a wall of roughly-comparable, roughly-decent photo sets. Nobody stands out on photo quality alone anymore, because almost nobody has bad photos left to compare against.

Why a tour still stands out

Comparatively few local businesses have a virtual tour, even now, which means it's still doing the differentiating work photos used to do. It also carries a different kind of credibility: a curated photo gallery is understood to show a business's best angles, while a tour reads as showing the actual space, warts and all, which builds trust a gallery structurally can't.

What this means practically

It's not an argument against photography, photos remain essential and worth doing well. It's an argument for not stopping there if standing out on a crowded listing actually matters to your business, since the businesses pulling ahead now are the ones offering a searcher something beyond a set of curated stills.

Questions people ask

Should we replace our photo gallery with a tour?

No, they do different jobs. Photos work well for quick scanning and social sharing; a tour works for the deeper look someone takes once they're genuinely interested. Most listings benefit from both.

How many local competitors actually have a virtual tour?

It varies by category, but in most local sectors it's still a minority, which is exactly why it remains a genuine differentiator rather than table stakes.

I used Biztour to get virtual tours done of all our coworking spaces and I am so pleased with how they turned out! They were super communicative, and really flexible to help us hit our deadlines.
