NAP Consistency: Why It Matters for Local SEO

Street versus St sounds trivial. It genuinely isn't, to the algorithm.

NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone number, and the rule behind it is simple to state and easy to get quietly wrong: it needs to match, exactly, everywhere your business is listed online, your website, your Google Business Profile, Facebook, any directory. A mismatch doesn't just confuse a customer, it makes it harder for Google to confidently tie every mention of your business to the same real place.

  • Name, Address and Phone number need to match exactly across every online listing
  • Small differences (Street vs St, an old suite number, a defunct phone line) genuinely count
  • Inconsistency makes it harder for Google to confirm all mentions refer to the same business
  • A yearly audit, searching your own business name and address together, catches most drift

Why a small formatting difference actually matters

'123 High Street' and '123 High St' look identical to a person, but inconsistency across listings is exactly the kind of ambiguity that makes it harder for Google's systems to confidently associate every online mention with one real, single business, especially when there are other, genuinely different businesses with similar names elsewhere.

Where inconsistency quietly creeps in

An old phone number left on a directory from years ago, a suite number missing on one listing, a business name that's 'Smith & Co' in one place and 'Smith and Co Ltd' in another, all common and all avoidable once you know to look for them. These accumulate silently over years as a business updates its own website but forgets the dozen other places it's listed.

The practical fix: a yearly audit

Search your business name and address together, and check every result that comes back genuinely matches your current, correct details. This takes well under an hour once a year and catches the majority of drift before it becomes a real problem for how confidently Google associates your listings.

Questions people ask

Does NAP consistency matter even for a single-location business with no directories to manage?

Yes, even a single location tends to appear on more listings than owners realise, old directories, review sites, social profiles, and each one is worth checking.

What's the fastest way to find every place our business is listed?

Searching your exact business name and postcode together in Google surfaces most of them quickly, along with any old or duplicate listings worth correcting or removing.
