Most businesses set their Google Business Profile up once and never revisit it, which means small gaps and out-of-date details quietly sit there costing enquiries indefinitely. This is the complete checklist, in the order it's worth doing.

None of it is complicated. It's mostly completeness, done properly, then left alone to compound.

  • Category, hours, phone and address, the baseline almost everyone has
  • A full description using the terms customers actually search
  • Every relevant secondary category filled in, not just the primary one
  • A real photo set, and a virtual tour if your space is part of the sell
  • A habit of posting updates, even brief ones, so the profile reads as active

The baseline (most businesses have this)

Category, hours, phone number, website and service area. Check these are current right now, wrong hours around a holiday period is one of the most common, most avoidable causes of a lost customer who turns up to a closed door.

The part most businesses skip

A full description that actually uses the terms customers search, not just your brand name. Every relevant secondary category filled in, since Google surfaces businesses partly based on category matching and an incomplete category list means missing searches you'd otherwise appear for. And a real photo set, not a handful of phone snaps taken once, years ago.

The part that separates a good profile from a great one

A virtual tour, where your physical space is genuinely part of the sell, gives a searcher something to actively engage with rather than passively scroll past. Combined with a habit of posting brief updates every few weeks, this is what makes a profile read as a currently active, cared-for business rather than one that was set up once and forgotten.

Questions people ask

How long does it take to bring a profile up to this standard?

The basic checks (hours, category, description) take about ten minutes. Adding a full photo set and a tour is a separate project, but the audit itself is quick.

How often should this checklist be revisited?

A quick check every few months, and a full review any time your business changes, opening hours, services, a refurbishment, so the profile never drifts out of date without anyone noticing.

I used Biztour to get virtual tours done of all our coworking spaces and I am so pleased with how they turned out! They were super communicative, and really flexible to help us hit our deadlines.
