Footfall Dropped? A Checklist Before You Panic

Check the boring things first. They're usually the actual cause.

A footfall drop feels like it needs a big response, but the actual cause is very often something small and boring: outdated hours on your listing, a photo set that's gone stale, a competitor that's simply started doing what you do, better, closer, or with more visible content.

Before assuming the worst or planning an expensive campaign, work through the boring checks first. They catch more problems than people expect.

  • Check your Google Business Profile is accurate: hours, phone number, category, description
  • Check your listing is still appearing for the searches it used to rank for
  • Check whether a new or refurbished competitor has opened nearby
  • Check how current your photos and any virtual tour actually are
  • Check recent reviews for a pattern you might have missed

Start with your Google Business Profile

Wrong opening hours, especially around a bank holiday or a schedule change, quietly costs footfall without anyone noticing until it's been wrong for weeks. Check hours, phone number, category and description are all still accurate, this takes ten minutes and it's a genuinely common, genuinely fixable cause.

Check whether you're still visible at all

Search for your own business, and for the general terms customers would use to find a business like yours, from a different device if you can. Rankings shift, and a profile that used to appear reliably in the local pack can quietly drop out without any obvious signal beyond the footfall itself declining.

Check what's changed nearby, and what's changed about you

A new or recently refurbished competitor genuinely does redirect footfall, and it's worth knowing if that's happened before assuming the problem is entirely on your side. At the same time, check how current your own content actually is: photos taken years ago, a tour that no longer reflects a refurbishment, or reviews that have quietly turned less positive are all things worth auditing honestly.

Questions people ask

How long does this checklist take to work through?

Most of it can be checked in under half an hour: your own listing, a couple of searches from another device, and a scan of recent reviews.

What if everything checks out and footfall is still down?

That's when it's worth looking at genuinely new content, updated photos, a virtual tour if you don't have one, since a listing that's accurate but unremarkable can still lose out to a competitor's more compelling one.
