DIY Virtual Tour vs Professional Photographer
Both make a virtual tour. They don't make the same one.

A consumer 360 camera costs under £300 and free tour software will stitch and host the result for nothing. On paper, that makes a professional shoot starting at £525 a hard sell. In practice, the two produce genuinely different results, and which one is right depends on what the tour needs to do for your business, not just what it needs to look like.
We'll say upfront where we're biased: we're a professional photography company. But we'd rather you make an informed choice and stay a customer for years than oversell you a service you didn't need.
What DIY actually gets you right
For a low-stakes space, a founder-run business on a tight budget, or a first tour just to see if the format works for you, a consumer camera and free software is a genuinely reasonable starting point. It gets something live, and something live beats nothing.
Where it tends to fall down is lighting, exposure and stitching quality: consumer cameras handle mixed light (a bright window next to a dim corner) badly, and stitching errors, wobbly verticals and blown-out highlights are the tell that a tour was shot on a budget, whether or not a visitor consciously notices.
What professional capture actually changes
A professional shoot uses proper lighting equipment and camera positioning to balance a room the way your eye does, not the way a phone-grade sensor does. Verticals stay straight, transitions between scenes are seamless, and the result reads as considered rather than improvised - which matters more the higher the stakes of the decision your visitor is making.
It also comes with the parts that don't show up in a single tour: a Google Trusted Photographer badge that some Google Business Profile features specifically require, correct technical setup so the tour publishes and indexes properly, and someone to call if something needs updating.
When the difference is worth paying for
The stakes matter more than the space. A wedding venue, a clinic, a showroom selling a five-figure kitchen, or any business where the visitor is making a high-consideration decision benefits directly from a tour that looks as considered as the decision itself. A low-footfall, low-stakes space has less to lose from a rougher DIY version.
Our own tiers start at £525 for up to 10 scenes, which for a lot of small businesses is close enough to the DIY cost once you account for the camera purchase and the time spent learning to shoot and stitch it properly.
Questions people ask
Can I mix the two: DIY now, professional later?
Yes, and it's a reasonable path. Many businesses start with a DIY tour to prove the format works for their customers, then commission a professional shoot once they've seen the effect on enquiries.
Does Google treat DIY and professional tours differently?
Google doesn't penalise a DIY tour, but Street View Trusted publishing and certain Business Profile features are only available through a Google Trusted Photographer or Trusted Agency, which is worth checking before you invest time in a DIY setup if you want those specifically.
