Video vs Photography: When to Use Each
One gets scanned in a second. The other demands full attention.

Photography and video aren't competing for the same job, they're suited to genuinely different moments in how someone engages with your business. Photography gets scanned in a second and reused everywhere. Video demands a viewer's full attention for its full length, and does something with that attention photography can't.
- Photography: instantly scannable, reusable across every platform and format
- Video: builds emotion and momentum, but requires the viewer's committed attention
- Photography works for comparison and quick decisions; video works for persuasion and story
- Most businesses genuinely benefit from both, used in different places for different reasons
What photography is uniquely good at
A photo can be scanned in under a second, which makes it the right format for anywhere someone's comparing options quickly: a Google listing, a search result, a gallery. It's also endlessly reusable, the same shot works on a website, a listing, a printed brochure and social media without any re-editing.
What video is uniquely good at
Video builds momentum and emotion over time in a way a single frozen image can't: pacing, music, a story arc. It's the right format when the goal is genuinely persuading someone, not just informing them, but it demands their committed attention for its full length, which is a bigger ask than a glance at a photo.
Where most businesses actually need both
Photography for the listings and comparison moments where speed matters, video for the social and top-of-funnel moments where building genuine interest matters. Treating them as substitutes for each other, one instead of the other, usually means underperforming in whichever moment the missing format was better suited to.
Questions people ask
If we can only afford one this year, which should we choose?
For most local businesses, photography first, it's the format doing the work on your Google Business Profile and website comparison moments, which is where most local decisions actually happen.
Can the same shoot produce both?
Booking both in the same visit is more cost-effective than separate shoots, though they use different equipment and techniques, it's not simply extracting stills from video footage.
