Virtual Tour vs 360 Photos: What's Actually the Difference?

One is a photo you can spin. The other is a space you can walk through.

A single 360 photo and a virtual tour can look identical in a thumbnail, both show a spherical, spinnable view of a room, and the terms get used loosely enough online that the distinction genuinely confuses people booking their first shoot.

The difference is connection, not resolution. One photo is a single viewpoint you can look around. A tour links several viewpoints together so you can move between them.

  • A 360 photo is one viewpoint, spinnable, but static, you can't move through it
  • A tour links multiple scenes with clickable hotspots, so a visitor moves between rooms
  • Most single-room spaces still need more than one scene to read as a full space
  • A tour, not a single photo, is what publishes to your Google Business Profile as a virtual tour

What a single 360 photo actually gives you

A single 360 photo is exactly what it sounds like: one spherical image from one spot in the room, which a viewer can spin around and look up or down within. It's genuinely useful for a small, single-purpose space, a booth, a single hotel room, a stall, where there's nowhere else to walk to. What it can't do is take a visitor anywhere else.

What makes it a tour

A tour is a set of these same 360 scenes, connected by clickable hotspots so a visitor moves from one to the next the way they'd walk through a door. That's the entire mechanical difference: connection. A small retail unit might link 8 to 10 scenes; a larger venue with distinct zones might link 20 or more.

This is also the difference that determines what shows up where. Google's virtual tour feature on a Business Profile expects a connected tour, not a single photo, because the whole point is letting a searcher explore the space, not glance at one static image.

When one photo is genuinely enough

If your entire premises is one small, single-purpose space with nowhere meaningful to walk to, a single 360 photo can be a reasonable, lower-cost option. The moment there's more than one area someone would want to see, reception and the treatment room, the shop floor and the changing rooms, a connected tour is doing real work a single photo can't.

Questions people ask

Is a 360 photo cheaper than a full tour?

Our tiers are built on scene count, so fewer scenes, whether that's a near-single-photo space or a small tour, naturally costs less. Our Small tier covers up to 10 scenes from £525.

Can I upgrade a single photo to a full tour later?

Yes, though it usually means a fresh shoot with additional scenes rather than adding to the original single capture, since the new scenes need to connect properly to the existing one.

Does Google Maps distinguish between the two?

Google's virtual tour feature specifically expects a connected set of scenes. A single 360 photo can still appear among your regular photos, but it won't behave as the walk-through tour feature.

I used Biztour to get virtual tours done of all our coworking spaces and I am so pleased with how they turned out! They were super communicative, and really flexible to help us hit our deadlines.
