A Matterport dollhouse view of a space captured by Biztour

How Does a Matterport Tour Actually Work?

The 3D dollhouse and measurements explained, from a Matterport service partner.

Matterport works differently to a standard 360 tour. Instead of stitching separate panoramic scenes together, a Matterport camera scans a space and builds a genuine 3D model of it, dimensionally accurate, that a visitor can walk through, spin into a dollhouse view, or drop into floor plan mode to check measurements.

As a Matterport service partner, this is the format we reach for whenever the buyer on the other end genuinely needs to understand scale and layout, not just get a feel for the space.

  • Builds a real 3D model, not linked photos - walk-through, dollhouse and floor plan views
  • Captures accurate measurements as part of the scan, not as a separate step
  • Best suited to property, construction and anywhere layout matters to the decision
  • From £550, hosted at £60 a year, delivered by an official service partner

The scan, not a photo shoot

A Matterport shoot uses a dedicated 3D camera that captures colour and depth data from a series of positions through the space, the same 2 to 8 hour range as a standard tour depending on size. The camera isn't just taking pictures, it's measuring the room as it goes, which is what makes the dollhouse and floor plan views possible afterwards.

That scan data is processed into the finished model: a walk-through view that moves like a standard tour, a dollhouse view that peels back the roof to show the whole layout from above, and a floor plan view with real measurements a viewer can check themselves.

What the dollhouse view is actually for

The dollhouse view answers a question a normal tour can't: how does this room relate to that one? For a multi-room office, a house, or a venue with several connected spaces, seeing the whole layout at once, roof off, is what lets someone understand the space rather than just look at it one room at a time.

It matters most when the decision genuinely depends on layout: does this office fit our team the way we're arranged now, does this venue's flow work for our event, is this floor plan actually what the listing photos suggested.

When Matterport is the right call over a Google tour

If your customers are choosing you on atmosphere, a Google virtual tour on your Business Profile usually does more for you, because that's where they're already searching. If they're choosing you on layout and scale, an office letting, a venue booking, a property, a construction handover, Matterport's measurements and dollhouse view are doing real work a Google tour can't.

Plenty of clients end up wanting both: a Google tour for discovery, a Matterport tour for the serious follow-up once someone's genuinely interested. Our comparison of Google versus Matterport goes through exactly when each one earns its place.

Questions people ask

Is a Matterport tour more expensive than a Google tour?

Matterport starts from £550 against £525 for a Google tour of the same size, plus £60 a year hosting on both enhanced and Matterport formats. The bigger difference is what you get: a real 3D model with measurements, not just linked scenes.

Can I get measurements without the full walk-through view?

The floor plan view is part of the same delivery, so you get all three: walk-through, dollhouse and measured floor plan, from one shoot.

Does Matterport work for a small single room?

Yes, though the dollhouse view earns less of its keep on a single room with nothing to relate it to. For a single space, a standard Google tour is often the more cost-effective choice unless you specifically need the measurements.

I used Biztour to get virtual tours done of all our coworking spaces and I am so pleased with how they turned out! They were super communicative, and really flexible to help us hit our deadlines.
