What Is Local Search and Why It Matters

'Near me' intent, whether or not anyone actually types those words.

Local search is any search with a 'near me' intent behind it, whether or not the words 'near me' are actually typed. Someone searching just 'dentist' or 'coffee shop' while physically in a particular area is making a local search, and Google treats it as one, surfacing map results and local listings rather than generic websites.

  • Local search covers any query with implied nearby intent, not just literal 'near me' phrasing
  • It's triggered by device location, so the same search shows different results in different places
  • For a physical business, it's often the single largest source of genuine, ready-to-visit traffic
  • Local search results favour Google Business Profile listings over standard website ranking

How Google decides a search is local

Device location, search terms that imply proximity (a service plus a place name, or simply the category of a business people generally choose locally), and even the specific words used all factor into whether Google shows map results and a local pack instead of standard organic listings. This happens automatically and constantly, without the searcher consciously invoking it.

Why this matters more for a physical business than website ranking does

Someone searching locally has already decided, at least loosely, that they want something nearby, right now or soon. That's about as ready-to-visit as search intent gets, which is why local search results, dominated by Google Business Profile listings rather than website content, often drive more genuine footfall for a physical business than general website SEO ever will.

What this means practically

Your Google Business Profile, not just your website, is doing the heavy lifting for this kind of traffic, which is why completeness, photos, reviews and a virtual tour on the profile itself matter as much as, sometimes more than, general website SEO for a business that lives or dies on local footfall.

Questions people ask

Does local search only apply to businesses with a physical shop?

It applies most strongly to any business people search for by proximity, shops, but also clinics, venues, offices and service providers with a genuine local service area.

Can a business rank well in local search without a strong website?

To a real degree, yes, because local search results lean heavily on the Google Business Profile itself rather than website content. A strong profile is often more impactful than website SEO for this specific kind of traffic.
