Google Reviews vs Trustpilot: Which Matters More?

One sits inside the decision. The other requires a detour to find.

For a local, physical business, this usually isn't a close call. Google reviews sit directly inside the moment someone's deciding whether to visit, right there on the Maps listing and the local search result. Trustpilot requires a deliberate detour to a separate site most local customers were never going to make.

That doesn't make Trustpilot worthless, it's just solving a different problem for a different kind of business.

  • Google reviews appear exactly where a local buying decision happens, no detour required
  • Trustpilot suits ecommerce and larger brands more than local, walk-in businesses
  • Review volume and recency matter more on Google, since it's the platform local searchers actually see
  • Most local businesses should focus review-generation effort on Google first, without ignoring Trustpilot if it's already established

Where the decision actually happens

Someone searching for a local business sees your Google rating and review count directly in the search result and on Maps, before they've clicked anything. That's the exact moment a decision to visit, call or scroll past gets made, and Google reviews are sitting right inside it. Trustpilot reviews exist on a separate site a local searcher has almost no reason to visit deliberately.

Where Trustpilot genuinely earns its place

Trustpilot tends to matter more for ecommerce and larger, less locally-anchored brands, where customers are comparing companies rather than choosing between the three businesses near them geographically. If you're already established there and it's driving genuine trust for a wider, non-local audience, it's still worth maintaining, just not at the expense of your Google presence.

Where to focus limited effort

For most local, physical businesses, Google should be the priority every time there's a choice about where to spend review-generation effort, simply because it's the platform actually influencing the decision at the moment it's being made. Trustpilot is worth maintaining if it's already established, not worth building from scratch instead of Google.

Questions people ask

Should we ask customers to review us on both platforms?

If Trustpilot is already relevant to your business, it doesn't hurt, but Google should get priority for a local business, since that's where the decision is actually being made.

Do Google reviews affect search ranking directly?

Review count and rating are one of several signals in local search ranking, alongside profile completeness and relevance, so more genuine reviews do help visibility, not just conversion.
